The Ministry of Health invites New Yorkers to throw any Topps ground beef patties due to possible contamination of E. coli. Topps, the manufacturer recalled the product in several states, including New York. If contaminated meat is consumed, the contaminating microbe - E. coli 0157: H7 - can cause severe diarrhea and kidney damage and even death. The latest information call the USDA is available here. New York City Health Department is investigating two possible illnesses related to this recall.Patients - a Staten Island girl and her mother - both consumed Topps hamburgers, but no case has been definitively linked to the meat through laboratory analysis. She was diagnosed with infection with E. mothers coli disease is still under investigation. To date, there are seven confirmed
cases of E. coli O157: H7 in the State of New York and 25 nationwide, in association with this recall.The Ministry of Health is actively working with physicians and laboratories to detect and investigate possible cases of E. coli. As a precaution, the Agency reminds all those who ate Topps hamburgers and develops symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal cramps and bloody stools, seek medical attention immediately. As a reminder, New Yorkers can help prevent E. coli, by cooking meat thoroughly (at least 160 F for ground beef), keeping raw meats and their juices away from other foods during cooking and regular hand washing.
